Getting there
Several airlines fly into Lungi International Airport from Europe and local countries.
The main international flights are by British Midland three times a week from London Heathrow, Astraeus from London Gatwick and SN Brussels from Brussels, each flying twice a week. Flights are also available from other countries within the region. International flights normally arrive in the evening, which means an overnight stop at the Lungi airport hotel. Next day transfer to Bonthe can be made either by road, boat or air.
The normal route is by sea along the coast and takes about five hours. The road journey enables visitors to see something of the country along the way, but roads are sometimes rough and the journey can take six hours including the final transfer down the river to the island. Travel by air is fastest but costs more and depends on the availability of helicopters and/or fixed wing aircraft.
